How To Use An Air Conditioner Remote

Holding A Remote Control

With air conditioners becoming more and more popular, it's no surprise that the technologies behind them have improved too. As such, you can be forgiven if you get confused by all the buttons and symbols on your remote. Carry on reading for a straightforward guide on how to use an air conditioner remote so that you can make the most of your system.

How to use an air conditioner remote

The air conditioner remote you have will depend on the brand and style of your air conditioner, but most will have the same five basic functions, which are:

On/Off

All air conditioner remotes should have an identifiable on and off button. This is quite self-explanatory but can be useful if you prefer to manually control your A/C rather than setting a timer.

Temperature

The temperature button on your air conditioner remote will most likely tell you what the temperature of the air conditioner is at any given moment. In some cases, you will be able to repeatedly press this button to see the current set temperature, the outdoor temperature and the ambient room temperature. How the remote displays this information will depend on the brand of the air conditioner and the style of the remote.

Timer

The timer button allows you to set a designated time that you would like the air conditioner to turn on and turn off. This is an extremely handy function for managing your electricity bills and means you can keep the A/C off when you're not in and set it to come on before you're due to arrive home.

Mode

The mode button is notoriously the most confusing button on an air conditioning remote, but each remote usually has the following four mode settings:

  • Auto: Auto mode means that the air conditioner will decide which setting is the right one given the current temperature. This is typically the best mode to have your air conditioner on as it can be the most efficient one for your home.
  • Cool: Cool mode is where the air conditioner will circulate cool, chilled air throughout your home or your room until the desired temperature is reached. Be wary of using this mode all the time though as it is the least efficient and can lead to significant increases in your energy bill.
  • Fan: Fan mode turns off the compressor, meaning that it's only the fan that is circulating air around the room. This mode may not provide the coldest air on an especially warm day, but it's much more efficient.
  • Dry: Dry mode works to remove humid air from the room. Compared to cool mode, it uses significantly less energy to cool a room.

Fan

The fan button is not related to fan mode. The fan button resets the air conditioner to factory speed, which is one of the most efficient ways to use your air conditioner.
