Top Energy-Saving Tips for Your Home

Switching Bulb To LED

Energy efficiency is a simple way you can save money and minimise your carbon footprint. Ahead are a few of our top tips for saving energy in your home or office…

  1. Switch to LED bulbs. LED bulbs use significantly less power than traditional incandescent bulbs, meaning they’ll last much longer and bring down your electricity bill. They also produce less heat than traditional bulbs so they can help to keep your house cooler in summer months.
  2. Unplug electronics when they're not in use. Many electronics, such as televisions and computer chargers, use energy even when they're turned off. Unplugging these devices can help to reduce your energy usage.
  3. Wash clothes in cold water. Most of the energy used by washing machines goes towards heating the water, which is why a cold cycle is a great way to save energy.
  4. Try hanging your clothes to dry and bypassing the dryer machine entirely.
  5. Use a low-flow showerhead. Low-flow showerheads use less water, saving you money on your water and energy bills.
  6. Use a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat allows you to set your heating and cooling to turn on and off at specific times of the day, reducing energy usage when you're not at home or asleep.
  7. Invest in insulation. Insulation can help keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, decreasing the need for air conditioning and heating systems. This can be added to walls, ceilings, floors, walls and any other area where air leaks may occur.
  8. Use energy-efficient appliances. When it's time to replace appliances such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers and ovens, do a little research to find models that are more energy efficient.
  9. Take shorter showers. This is a great way to preserve a valuable resource while also restricting your water and energy usage.
  10. Add a layer. When the weather starts getting chilly, reach for a jumper or hoodie before moving to switch on the heating.
  11. Meal prep efficiently. Thaw frozen foods in advance instead of using your microwave.
  12. Be purposeful. The longer you stand in front of a fridge or freezer door, the more cold air will escape. Try to decide what you need before opening the door.
  13. Use the sun. If you have solar panels, schedule the use of larger appliances–such as washing machines and dishwashers–during the day to make the most of the energy produced by your solar system.
  14. Motion sensor lights. To avoid leaving outdoor lights on overnight or during the day, let a motion sensor do the work by switching lights on and off. These are also great for security purposes.
  15. Pack a full load. Run your washing machine and dishwasher with full loads only to avoid wasted energy.
  16. Consumer habits. Simple lifestyle changes, like turning off lights when you leave a room, can help to reduce your overall energy usage. Take the time to consider your consumer habits to recognise areas you might be able to improve.

Making small changes to your lifestyle can make a huge difference when it comes to saving energy and reducing costs on monthly utilities bills. For more energy saving tips, contact our team on 0438 597 286.
